Young Woman Tells Her Story Of Cancer With A Personal Recording And Dance

Everyone has struggles in their life, which issomething that Brianna Mercado never fails to remind herself. Although, I think shes gone through much more than some of us ever will.

Brianna had fought to win the battle against cancer, twice, by age 22. First it was against a rare bone cancer, Ewing’s sarcoma. The second time it was againstthyroid cancer, a devastating diagnosis she received on Christmas Eve. Both times, she tried staying strong for her loved ones, and what shone through it all was herimmense passion for life.

In 2014, shegave a TED Talk to tell people about her story, and provide a strong message for anyone whos struggling out there. She knows that her story may stem from her battles with cancer, but she makes it clear that this talk is not another cancer story, buta story about staying in control and true to who you are and who you want to be without giving up.

She shows in this talk how strong she has become, how she has kept positivity, and how inspirational of a person she is through words, and dance. When she shares her personal recording from her phone, she lets you in on a very personal memory and emotion…

Below are some bits of her journey and some information about where she is today!

Brianna Mercadosmiles through 25 rounds of radiation, 14 rounds of weeklong chemotherapy, six surgeries, and over 50 blood and platelet transfusions.

After all of that, she finally beat her first battle, but the fear of relapse could never leave her brain.

Mercadobought a one-way ticket to NYC to start new, but she had to continue going on follow-ups to make sure she didnt relapse.

Diagnosed again, this time with thyroid cancer, she felt that she was always being dragged back to the hospital by this disease.

She beat it again, but realized that no matter what your health is at any point in time, you can never truly be cancer free. That fear in your head and the battle you fought will always remain embedded in you.

“A lot of magical things have happened since then,” Mercadosaid.

She returned to NYC after her treatment in L.A. and got back into her groove of dancing, performing, and auditioning.

You may not be able to control the world, but you can control who you choose to be and what actions you take. So choose to be something, when your life starts to spin […] Choose to be anything. And learn to let go of that voice in your head, she says in her TED Talk.

Her cancer cells have shrunk by the day, and she is making sure that continues to happen at Memorial Sloan Kettering.

Currently, Mercadois not only dancing, but singing as well! She has been signed with MSA talent and will be in her firstmusical production this summer as an ensemble dancer in the Muny’s production of Aida.

The proof is in the people whosurround her; shes made it to her dreams with the same smile stained on her face.

“Basically, my life is a miracle. I have so much to be thankful for every day,” she said recently.

She proves every day to live by her motto:Life isnt about waiting for the storm to pass, its about learning to dance in the rain.

I could never do justice to Mercados story with my words, so please watch her TED Talk, hear from this woman herself, and watch her express her memories through dance.

You can continue to follow her inspirational life on her personal website!
